Stuart Middle School Core Class Scheduling
All students will be scheduled into a Connect 21 class, which will serve as their advisory group and main point of contact throughout the school year. Each student will be assigned core classes in Math, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, and one of their core teachers will also serve as their advisor. Students will be placed in either the Upstairs or Downstairs Community, helping to create a smaller, more connected learning environment. We use a variety of student data to create balanced classes that support the best possible learning environment for all students. As such, we are unable to accommodate requests for specific teachers, peers, or community placements.
Exploratory Scheduling
At Stuart Middle School we believe in giving students the opportunity to engage in a variety of experiences so they can choose an appropriate pathway of interest to them in high school. In order to expose students to as many different experiences as possible, students' exploratory classes will be assigned in the following ways:
In 6th grade, students will engage in two different exploratory classes per quarter, giving them the opportunity to try the following eight classes throughout their 6th grade year.

In 7th grade, students will be randomly assigned four exploratory classes from the options they were introduced to in 6th grade. This approach is designed to give students a wide range of experiences as they begin thinking about their interests and strengths.
In 8th grade, students will have the opportunity to submit their preferences for exploratory classes, and we will do our best to assign them to options that match their interests. This process helps prepare them for making more focused choices as they move into high school pathways after 8th grade.
We also offer AVID for 7th and 8th graders, as well as Band (6th–8th) and Choir (6th–7th). These are year-long electives that students must apply or sign up for, and they take the place of the rotating exploratory classes.
During one of the exploratory periods, some of our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse students who are still mastering English will have the opportunity to work in a smaller class size with a teacher specifically trained in supporting language acquisition in order to be successful in all learning environments.
