Better Together: Helping Every Raptor Start Strong

Illustration of a smiling student supported by home and school, with the words “Better Together: Home + School = Student Success.”

As we prepare for the year ahead, we want to share a few ways families can help students have a successful middle school experience. This year, we will place a strong focus on three priorities:

  • Arriving at school and class on time
  • Coming prepared with school supplies and a fully charged Chromebook
  • Keeping cell phones off and stored in backpacks throughout the school day

Strong routines at home make a meaningful difference at school. Your partnership will help students build the responsibility, independence, and habits they need to succeed. Here are 10 ways we can work together:

1. Stay Connected

Download the 27J App and enable notifications to receive important school updates. Families can also communicate directly with teachers using Two-Way Chat, which is available in multiple languages.

2. Check Infinite Campus Weekly

Set aside 10 minutes each week—Sunday works well—to review Infinite Campus with your student. Together, check grades, missing assignments, attendance, tardies, and report cards. Missing-assignment reports will be sent home each Monday.

3. Charge the Chromebook Every Night

Students are expected to arrive each day with a fully charged Chromebook and the necessary school supplies. Establishing a simple nightly charging routine will help your student come prepared and avoid missing valuable learning time.

Being prepared each day is a schoolwide expectation. If a student regularly arrives without a charged Chromebook or needed supplies, staff will contact home so we can work together to address the concern.

4. Build a Homework Routine

Ask your student to show you their digital planner each evening. Assignments that still need to be completed should be marked in red. A brief daily check-in reinforces the expectation that unfinished work is completed at home while helping students develop organization, responsibility, and independence.

5. Keep Cell Phones Away

Cell phones must remain off and stored in backpacks throughout the school day. Phones that are out will be collected in accordance with school expectations. Research shows that students are better able to focus, participate, and learn when phones are put away.

6. Make Attendance and Punctuality a Priority

School begins promptly at 8:25 a.m. Each absence results in missed instruction across seven classes, and repeated tardies quickly add up. Please help your student arrive on time, prepared, and ready to learn every day.

7. Stay Involved

Middle school students are developing greater independence, but they still need consistent support from adults. Continue monitoring grades, attendance, and tardies; ask about assignments; and encourage your student to speak with teachers when they need help.

8. Practice Organization

Organization is a skill that must be taught and practiced. Help your student clean out their backpack regularly, maintain needed supplies, keep track of assignments, and follow a consistent homework routine. These habits will help prepare them for high school and beyond.

9. Encourage Positive Choices

Friendships and social dynamics often change during middle school. Talk with your student about kindness, responsibility, respect, and making positive choices both in and out of school.

10. Celebrate Growth

Recognize effort, responsibility, perseverance, improvement, and character—not only grades. Celebrating growth helps students build confidence and remain motivated when learning becomes challenging.
